There is now a very first draft of the GKOS application for MeeGo available at gkos.com - works on Nokia N9 at least. Many features are still missing but the concept can be tested. Bugs exist as well.
This GKOS seems like a very interesting idea, though it has a high threshold to get into.
The potential is clear to me.
However, I can't seem to be able to find the accented letters - I once accidentally managed to write an é or è, but I would really like to know how to type an ë…
Aside that, GKOS on N9 should not be left in background, it is a huge battery drain,.. would be good if that got fixed…
It depends on the layout language but normally accents are found if you select SYMB and then one of the keys on top of the bar keys. Grave and acute accents are generally found like this: Shift \ and Shift / (they look the same as \ and / but are much smaller). First the letter, then the accent. In the English layout ë is typed by first typing e and then SYMB and ¨.
Selected accents are more easily available for languages that use them, depending on layout.
I need to study the battery consumption. There is a 10ms timer running; could be that…
ps. Positive reviews for the app are wecome. Now there are too many negative ones by 'lazy people' who do not want to learn new things, or propose improvements. - Thank you for your construcive comments!
I want to buy a GKOS keyboard for my N9! I am learning the virtual keyboard version with MeeGo, but I really want a physical keyboard! I suppose I would prefer it be bluetooth-based; I don't particularly like the idea of a usb wire snaking out of my N9.
By the way, isn't there a version of the GKOS software released in April 2012? Does the MeeGo version reflect that update?
There's the latest development version available at http://gkos.com/gkos/meego/ which is normally an update of the officially distributed one (for MeeGo/N9). As, you probably have noticed already, there are no harware GKOS keyboards for sale but you can find instructrions of how to build one.
At gkos.com/meego you will find a new test version which has these additional features compared to the Ovi-published official version:
New language setting: Devanagari (for typing Hindi and Sanskrit)
- 'Experimental' Optimized Layout option is available in Settings
- Autorepeat (Press Abc long to start repeating the latest typed character)
- Shortcuts:
Swipe Abc button to Text area = move to Send text as an SMS
Swipe Tools button to Text area = Show latest received SMS
- Night clock during charging: While showing the received SMS, tap to show night clock (darker during night hours) and tap to move back to show received message (Draws some more power so just use while charging)
There's still 8 sec extra time added to loading (starting the app) due to an error message: "libqtcontacts-tracker: engine.cpp:1591: Not cleaning up obsolete resources for nao:hasTag property since the property's range is too generic (rdfs:Resource)." - If you know how to avoid this, please inform! This started appearing after the latest OS updates.
